Just Checking In...

Hello all!!! I know I haven't posted anything in a few weeks, but I've been very busy.  Busy as a bee, beaver, squirrel, and any other animal that comes to mind.  I had final school projects that I had to finish up.  Plus, I graduated from college on December 17th (yay me!!!) And I had family come in from out of town to help celebrate my accomplishment.  Seven people in a two bedroom one bathroom apartment is not the type of setup I want to have on a regular basis.  But, my son loved it because he got to spend time with family that he doesn't get to see once every couple months.  Add that with entertaining a 5 year old who's out of school for the holidays, going out of town for Christmas, looking for a job...Whew!!! I'm tired just reading all of that.

So, needless to say, I haven't had much time for posting.  But, I have a couple of posts that I'm planning on doing by the end of next week.  Don't give up on me!!! I will be back in full effect shortly.  I would like to thank all of the people who take the time to read my blog and those who are following it as well.  There are MANY other style blogs out there, but you're making the choice to stop by and read my thoughts.  That really makes me feel special :)  Take care and I will "see" you in 2012!!

Grand Opening at A Natural Affair Beauty Lounge

Hi y'all!!! This past Sunday, I attended the grand opening celebration at A Natural Affair Beauty Lounge.  The event lasted from 4-7 pm, and it was a very nice event.  There were so many beautiful natural haired ladies, and guys, who participated.  I wanted to snatch out these two strand twist extensions and let my afro loose!! Lol!! Anyway, there were giveaways, including an entire set of the salon's signature product line, Metamorphosis Hair Care Systems.  There were also live demonstrations, descriptions of services they provide,  free samples of their products, free food and drinks, and an artist that painted pictures of attendees.  I must say it was one of the best grand openings I've been to in a long time.  So, you already know I had to snap some photos, but my camera died in the process :(.   Please enjoy the photos I did get.  And if you're interested in booking an appointment, you can either call 901-859-1113 or go to www.anaturalaffair.com.  "Come and chill at the lounge"

I got the turtleneck for $9, the blazer was on sale for $4, and my shorts were on sale for $4.  Here's the details:

Style Pet Peeves

We've all had that moment when we were out in public and saw someone wearing something that should've been left in the store that they saw it in.  But, for some reason, they decided to purchase it anyway.  I like to call them style pet peeves and I have compiled a list of them.  Do you think one of yours will make my list? Well keep reading and find out :)

Pet Peeve #10:  Guys wearing sagging pants.  I know this one should be on everyone's list of pet peeves.  Seeing a stranger's underwear out in public is not something I like to be exposed to.  Not to mention the fact that the majority of guys who do this are also wearing 1-2 pairs of shorts UNDERNEATH the too large pants are wasting clean clothes.  I really don't understand the point, nor do I want to.  Let's just please do away with sagging pants altogether.

Pet Peeve #9:  Older men who dress like guys half their age. I get so tired of seeing older men (40 and up) dressing like their younger sons, nephews, or in some cases, brothers (25 and under.)  Wearing the latest Timberland boots or Air Force Ones with your baseball cap turned to the back is a fashion statement that should only be worn by guys in their mid-late teens to their mid-twenties (and mid-twenties is pushing it.) If you're an older gentleman who enjoys dressing this way, please stop dressing like you just left the latest rapper's video shoot and dress more appropriately.  And by the way, STOP getting your hair cornrowed and go the barbershop and get a haircut.

Pet Peeve #8:  Women who like to wear every piece of jewelery they own at one time. There is nothing wrong with accessorizing your favorite outfit with a necklace, stacked bangle bracelets and a statement ring.  Just don't put on ALL of your jewelery at one time as if someone is going to take your stash away from you.  If you feel the need to put on many pieces at one time, put them all on.  Then, look in the mirror and take one or two pieces OFF.  If you're wearing some fabulously big earrings, don't put on a fabulously big statement necklace with it.  Instead, go for a statement ring or chunky bracelet.  A lot of times an outfit will dictate what type of jewelery is appropriate for that outfit.

Pet Peeve #7:  Women who over coordinate.  You may be wondering what I mean by that.  For example, let's say a woman has found a splendid (did I just use splendid?) royal blue colored dress.  So, that same woman decides that she must also have a pair of royal blue earrings with the matching necklace, royal blue shoes, and THEN puts on royal blue eyeshadow.  NOOOOOOOOO!!! That is too much of one color and is basically overkill.  Nowadays, things don't have to match anymore.  They can just go together.  She could've gone with a wide array of colors that go with royal blue.  If you're not sure about what goes with what color, a Color Wheel can be a tremendous help.

Pet Peeve #6:  Young women who wear leggins as pants.  I'm not hating on young women/women who wear leggins.  I could care less about who wears them.  But, If I can see your panty lines OR just your panties in general (meaning the color or print), your top is not long enough to cover up your butt.  You need to go home and start over.

Pet Peeve #5:  Women who do not take care of their weave/wig.  If you think that having a weave or wearing a wig is maintenance free, YOU'RE WRONG!!! You should treat it just like your real hair.  Meaning, you should comb it, curl it, roll it.  Whatever needs to be done to it in order for it to not look like you just got out of bed.  If you're not going to take care of it, please leave it where it is. Now that I think about what I just said, maybe some of these women ARE taking care of them just like their real hair.  Who knows.

Pet Peeve #4:   Women and men who dress their children like miniature adults.  That doesn't mean you can't dress up your children in dress clothes for special occasions and such.  I mean parents who let their 5 year old son have his ears pierced.  Or those parents who let their 3 year old daughter wear a halter top.  Please think long and hard before making these types of decisions.

Pet Peeve #3:   People who wear pajamas in public.  Pajamas have their appropriate time and place to be worn.  Around the house or in bed at night.  If you don't feel like getting dresses, at least put forth the effort to put on a pair of jeans, a tee shirt and sneakers.  Instant outfit.

Pet Peeve #2:  Men who wear short sleeved shirts and neckties.  If you are over the age of 10, DO NOT DO THIS!!!! Even if you're wearing a sportcoat over your dress shirt, do not do this.  I can't stand when I see a grown man dressed like this. But, you may be thinking, what about the summer time??? Yes, even in the summer time.  They do make lightweight long sleeved dress shirts that can be worn when it's hot. Just leave the short sleeves and ties to the little boys.

Pet Peeve #1:  Women who wear too little shoes on purpose.  I have heard stories from many people who work in retail selling shoes about women doing this.  I don't understand for the life of me why someone would want to have their feet hurting on purpose.  Even when high heels fit right, they can still hurt your feet after hours of wear.  If your toes or your heels are hanging off of shoes your trying on, PLEASE go up to the next size.  And if you're wearing the largest size they have, just pick another shoe.  Or, see if they have it online.  A lot of times, shoe companies/retailers will carry larger shoes on the internet than in their stores.  So save yourself a lot of unnecessary pain and buy the proper size shoes.

Did your pet peeve make the list? If not, leave yours in the comment box below.  I can't wait to read your responses :)

Old School Fridays

Well, I know I'm all late and all (don't judge me) but Happy Friday!!! To celebrate, I decided to hit you with D-Nice.  I was at a friend's house last night watching The Wood and they played his song; it was my motivation. I've been loving D-Nice since I first saw him on Yo! MTV Raps ( I just dated myself.) So, for your viewing pleasure, here's "My Name is D-Nice" by....D-Nice.

Who's On My Campus

Hello everyone!!! I'm very excited about this edition of WOMC.  I have been stalking admiring this young lady's style since the first time I saw her.  I wanted to get Catherine's picture SO BADLY, but whenever I would see her, she would be rushing to class and I didn't want to bother her.  So, while I was waiting to go to class on Thursday, she went to the Fred and Ethel's kiosk to get some coffee.  That was my chance to finally snap her picture.  She is a very sweet and friendly lady with GREAT style.  Her mix of funky and classic silhouettes gives her a style that is effortlessly chic. Let me know if you're feeling her style the way I do.

A Man's Point Of View

Hello all!! I hope everyone had an excellent Thanksgiving holiday.  I know I really enjoyed spending time with my family and seeing friends I haven't seen in a while.  So, now that we have to get back to the business of working, schooling, or whatever you do to fill your time.  It's time for a new feature I have named A Man's Point of View.  I wanted to do a piece that features style from the male viewpoint.  This is something I would like to do on a regular basis.  So, without further ado, here's the first installment of A Man's Point of View.  I guess I should preface this with an advisement:  this post may contain language that some people may find offensive or funny (I'm not sure which one you will think it is.) Please be advised of such!!!

So tell my readers who you are and what you do for a living.

My name is Bryan Keith Scarbrough, I am 25 years old and I am a Rehab Technician at a wellness center.

What one word describes your style and why?
Classic. I say classic because my style is basic and masculine. I feel my style is how a man my age should dress, with some up to date modifications.

What are 4 pieces in your wardrobe that you can't live without?
I would have to say my neck ties, my jewelry, retro tennis shoes, and my cologne

If money were no object, what pieces would you like to add to your wardrobe?
I would like to add more sport coats because you can be casual with them or dress them up depending on the occasion. I would like to add more jeans also. Aint nothing like a good pair of Levi Strauss jeans. I also would like to add more dress shirts and retro Nikes.

What are some trends that you wish would die a flaming death.
There are so many trends that I wish people would stop wearing but for the sake of this I will keep it short. I can’t the skinny jeans especially on men. In today’s society I feel that men don’t dress like men any more. Men dress like ballet dancers with smedium(small and medium) shirts and extremely tight pants. So many men have taken the “metrosexual” title and hauled ass with it. I feel that the majority of this has to do with the hip hop generation i.e. Lil Wayne and a lot more, but he is the main target. I remember when sagging was the coolest trend; now the same guys who sag took those same pants and shrunk them to infant size.  I do not like the poindexter glasses. As a kid I can remember other kids who wore glasses got picked on especially if they were big and the lenses were thick.  I hate the trend that mainly the young white females wear and that is the oversized t-shirts, soccer shorts, and rain boots or ugg boots. The look makes them seem as if they don’t have anything underneath the shirt and that’s not cool. Last but not least, I hate the Polo trend. This trend is mainly worn by the young African American males who are in their twenties.  This trend is very irritating to me. They will wear the Polo hat, Polo shirt, Polo jacket, Polo jeans, Polo underwear, and Polo boots. This is a prime example of overkill. These guys walk around like walking billboards for Ralph Lauren. I know white guys who don’t wear that much Polo. This reminds me of the Tommy Hilfiger trend in the nineties when everybody was Hilfiger down to the socks and some people even sported the bootleg if they couldn’t afford the real thing. How can you say you are different when you look like four other guys in the classroom with you?

What's your favorite thing to see a woman wear and why?
I like to see a woman in a nice v neck t-shirt, jeans, and some casual shoes with her hair done.  So many women these days wear too many dresses with their ass out, high heels they can’t walk in, and thick make up that they have to chisel off their face.  The media has overused the word sexy and think that sexy means you have to be butt naked. In my opinion a female that wears a nice casual outfit is sexy to me. I like a woman to be classy not showing all her assy.

Rainy Day Blues

I don't know about you, but I hate rainy weather.  Especially the ones that are accompanied by wind and lots of gray clouds.  This is the type of weather that makes me want to stay home, curl up on my couch with some heavy covers, and watch TV all day.  But, since I had class, I had to put on my big girl panties and brave the storm.  I decided I wanted to look nice despite the weather, so I went for this blouse I purchased from old Navy off the clearance rack.  It was regularly price around $25, but I got it for around $13.  I had seen it previously and liked it, but I didn't want to pay full price for it.  When I visited the store on Monday, I saw it on clearance and snapped it up.  I also bought a black tunic length  3/4 puffy sleeve top with a tie neck and a aqua green colored turtle neck.  Both were on sale as well and I can't wait to add them to my wardrobe.

I decided to wear the tribal print blouse with a pair of dark colored jeans for a slight monochrome look.  I added a brown braided wide belt to help cinch the waist, my silver hoop earrings, and bronze colored flats.  Even though you can't see it in this picture, I'm also wearing an oval shaped silver ring from Charlotte Russe.  It actually looks like a miniature tribal mask that people hang on their walls as art.  It's amazing how I purchased this ring weeks before I purchased the blouse and they go together so well.  I tried to take a picture of the ring to show you guys, but it didn't work out too well.

Casual Outfit and Fighting For Love

I am still floating on air after last night's concert by The Foreign Exchange.  I.LOVE.THEM. and after their performance, I love them EVEN MORE!!!! Since I'm a single parent, I don't get to go out as much as I'd like to.  So, when I heard they were coming to town I had to take advantage.  I know this is a style blog, but I believe that great music is something that NEVER goes out of style.

Just the vibe in the room last night while TFE performed was just a beautiful thing.  I was even more amazed at all the guys there who not only knew the words to ALL their songs, but danced, waved and clapped their hands, and just genuinely had a bomb ass time.  And since I had a bomb ass time as well, I decided to show them my support and purchased one of their tee shirts.  I chose to wear it today because I couldn't wait to wear it.  Here's a picture of what I wore today:

It's nothing earth moving.  But since the weather has been blah for the past day and a half, I wanted to be comfy.  The jacket is from Old Navy, she shoes are Tommy Hilfiger boat shoes via TJ Maxx, the jeans are Lane Bryant, and the tee shirt is via The Foreign Exchange.  You can't read it in this picture, but it says "Fight For Love" which is one of the group's songs.  I think the reason why I purchased this one out of all the others is because of that title.  We fight daily to hold onto all the loves in our life.  Whether it's kids, spouse, significant other, parents, siblings, life in general.  Sometimes it can be a struggle, and you may not be able to see you way through.  But, if you just keep fighting, it will all be worth it in the end.  Oh, and I couldn't close this post out without showing a picture of me with Zo! who is really awesome!! All of the members were really friendly, down to earth, and open to signing autographs and taking pictures.  Whenever they decide to come back to Memphis, I will most definitely be buying a ticket.

Dressing in Style With Lane Bryant

To pass the time before I had to pick my son up from school, I decided to pass the time window shopping at Lane Bryant.  I was actually suprised to see the great selection of fall and winter clothes they had.  Whenever I shop at Lane Bryant, I usually only pick up their jeans and their intimate apparel.  But, I will actually have to give them kudos for having great party attire.  So, let's get into it!!!

Please pardon the way my camera makes this dress look.  It's actually red instead of fucshia.  I think this little number would be great for all of those upcoming holiday parties.  Or, a night out on the town with your significant other.  Cute!!

I simply love this sheer floral print jacket.  It really makes this simple, all black ensemble pop.  To give some definition to the waist, they added a thin black belt.  And I also love the color of the turquoise sweater on the other mannequin.  Bright colors that were worn in the spring and summer months have carried their way through the fall and winter months.  So, you don't have to put away your favorite bright colored shirts and jackets.  You just have to find a way to remix them with your fall and winter staples.

This cute sleeveless top can be dressed up or down.  For a casual look, you could wear it with your favorite pair of jeans and a blazer.   Dress it up with a black pencil skirt or slacks and some cute heels.  You can't go wrong either way.

This dress would be great for a night out on the town with the girls.  Just throw on some opaque tights and some hot boots, and you're good to go.

I love the way they put this top and scarf combo together.  It takes a black empire waist coat and jeans up a notch.  This would be perfect to wear on a Saturday afternoon out with the kids.

Now, these coats are just too haute!!! I especially like the plaid one, and they're at a good price point.  They're both around $160 dollars.  That's not bad for a wool coat.

This purple coat is the same as the grey on above.  But, I like it better in this color.  Now, you may not want to purchase a coat in purple because it may seem trendy or unpractical.  I totally understand; but I feel it would really give character to your outfits.  Dressing is supposed to be fun and this coat is definitely fun.

Who's On My Campus

I am pleased to present to you the lovely Destiny.  As I was leaving my class on Tuesday, I spotted her leaving the food kiosk.  So, I basically had to risk my life running on rain slicked floors to catch her and snap her picture.  I love EVERYTHING about her look; especially the fact that she didn't let the bad weather keep her from looking fabulous.  Would you believe it was raining outside, mixed with lots of wind and clouds??  And what's even better is that she was such a sweetheart!! So, she has great style and personality.  And that's always in season.

Old School Fridays

I'm sure by now you've heard of the untimely passing of Heavy D.  So, to celebrate his life and to celebrate Old School Fridays, I decided to show one of his music videos. I really don't know what else to say except for you will be greatly missed.  Hip hop has definitely another one of its greats. Rest in peace, Heavy D.

A Little Bit of Flannel...But In A Good Way

Hello all!! I know it's been a minute since I posted something.  But, with the current semester winding down, and graduation approaching quickly, I've been busy as 8 bees.  Anyway, since it's gotten back chilly, I decided to wear one of my plaid flannel shirts.  I really love this shirt because of the colors in it.  Who says flannel has to be manly!! Instead of wearing pants, I went with a little summer dress I purchased last year for my birthday.  It's black at the top with a square neckline and a denim bottom.  I really like the dress because it can be worn year round.  I added a pair of black opaque tights and my newly acquired boots.  I'm SO excited about these boots because I've been searching FOR YEARS for a pair of calf boots that I can get my big calves into.  So, on one of my many trips to TJ Maxx, I spotted them.  I decided to try them on, and when they fit, I felt like Cinderella!!  BTW, I was doing some serious clowning around in these pictures, so don't take them very seriously.  Lol!! So, here's the logistics about my outfit:

Shirt:   Old Navy
Dress:  TJ Maxx
Tights:  Ashley Stewart
Boots:  TJ Maxx
Ring:   Charlotte Russe
Earrings: Ashley Stewart

If you're interested in my hair, I decided to do some protective styling for the winter.  I got two strand twist extensions at A Natural Affair Beauty Lounge.  The owner, Takeisha Berry-Brooks, did my twists.  They actually look like they're growing out of my scalp, so she did a REALLY good job.  So, if you're ever in  Memphis or surrounding area and need a natural hair stylist, please give her a call at 901-859-1113.

Old School Fridays

Happy Friday y'all!!! To celebrate, I decided to dig into the milk crates and pull out a real dusty one.  Today's Old School Friday selection is Supersonic by J.J. Fad.  When I was in junior high, this was one of my favorite songs.  For some reason, I would make it my mission to learn all the words to my favorite songs.  So, of course I learned the words to the really fast part at the end.  Rap along if you know it; if you don't just bounce.  Enjoy and have a great weekend!!

Leopard Print and Orange Crush

Yesterday was movie pitch day in my Screenwriting class. So, I decided to dress up a bit to make my pitch a little more special.  I wore my navy wide legged slacks with my green v-neck sweater.  I bought the sweater in an extra large, but I think I could've gotten away with a large.  Anyway, I wanted to keep warm and also add a bit of interest, so I decided to wear my leopard print sheer blouse underneath.  And since I haven't carried Orange Crush yet, I thought it would give my outfit the pop it needed.  I think the look turned out great, despite the fit of the sweater.  Let me know what you think.

Who's On My Campus

This handsome young man is Danny. I spotted him waiting for his next class, so I decided to snap his picture. I really like the way he mixed dressy and casual to create his look. His black driving moccasins add the perfect polish to take his outfit to the next level. He proves you don't have to wear saggy pants and sneakers just because you're a college student. And even though I told him to look natural and not pose, he looks like he's posing. Lol!!

All That Glitters IS Gold...and Silver...and Black

Hello all!! On one of my many window shopping trips ( I do a lot of that), I ran across a lot of glitter, sequins, and lots of other things that sparkle.  Everything from shoes, to sweaters, to blouses, to jackets.  Sequins and glitter are a hot trend right now.  But, haven't they always been? And with the holidays coming up, you can make a bold statement at those Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's parties (do people have Thanksgiving parties?) Anyway, here are some pictures of what I saw at TJ Maxx.  The most expensive item was only priced at $50; if you're on a budget, you can look stylish for the cheap.  AND they still have layaway!!!

Can I just say I.L.O.V.E. this jacket.  It can be worn with a fitted tank or tee and your favorite pair of jeans.  Or, you can dress it up with your little black dress or a nice pair of dress pants.  I hope it will still be there when I get some money, but I know it won't :(

Aren't these flats too cute??!! You can't go wrong with a comfy pair of flats.  Plus, they have lots of sequins AND a flower on top.  Nice!!!

This sequined tee is a cute edition to your wardrobe.  It's casual enough to wear with jeans or a skirt.  And it's dressy enough to wear with a blazer and slacks on the job.

This little number looks better in person than it does in the picture.  Also, it's actually sheer in the back (which is also trending right now.)  This would look great with a woman's tuxedo or some skinny jeans and platform heels.

This pair of heels are fantastic!!! Can you say sparkles!!!  I would wear these with an understated dress or pencil skirt to let the shoes be the star of the show.  They definitely do not need to compete with anything else.

These next two blouses are my favorites out of all the ones I saw.  I especially love the off white one; it really makes the gold sequins pop. And the price is right too :)

Feelin' Sassy

The weather here has really been like a roller coaster.  Last week, we had highs in the 50's and lows in the 30's.  But today the high was 80; I took advantage of the warmer weather and decided to wear one of my eShakti dresses.  Since it was cooler this morning, I wore my denim jacket from Old Navy with it.  Along with my leopard print flats, wooden bangle bracelet and earrings, and my green ring.  And since my shoes got slightly cut off in these pictures, I also included a picture of my shoes.  This outfit served its purpose:  it was comfy and cute at the same time.  Oh, by the way, please disregard my son's car in these pictures.  I didn't realize they were in there until after they had been taken.  Charge it to my head and not my heart. Lol!!

Adventures in Window Shopping

This weekend, the little one and I spent our Saturday window shopping.  First, we took a trip to our local Salvation Army thrift store.  They had a really great selection of housewares and furniture.  But, as far as clothes were concerned (which is why we went in the first place), it was a total bust.  I really wish I could thrift like other ladies I read about in blogs.  Anyway, we left there and drifted to one of my favorite stores, DSW.  I couldn't leave without snapping a few pics of some cute shoes.

Aren't these just the cutest pair of booties??!! I can see these being worn with a sweater dress and some opaque tights.  These would carry you through fall and winter.

I thought these were cute because of the metallic straps and the stacked wooden heel.  These would be awesome with a really cute short sundress.  They also came in another color, but I preferred this color combination better.

When I saw these heels, my mouth dropped to the floor.  I've gotten really attached to animal print shoes (can you tell?) These shoes also came in another color, but these were much cuter.  And that bow and peep toe....FABULOUS!!!

These heels are really cute, but they're my least favorite of the bunch. The color combination makes them sassy. And the platform helps with comfort.

O....M....G!!!! This one is tied as my favorite of the group.  Steve Madden really knows how to make a shoe that is sexy and makes your inner diva come alive.  This shoe is no exception.  DIVA!!!!!!!!

I really love wedge heeled booties.
These beauties would look fab with a motorcycle jacket and boyfriend jeans.  Or, pair them with your favorite pair of skinny jeans and a long cardigan sweater.

Old School Fridays

Happy Friday Everyone!!! In celebration of the end of the work/school week, I want to show an old school hip-hop video.  This week's choice is Microphone Fiend by Eric B. and Rakim.  These two are one of the most influential duo's every to make hip-hop.  So watch, reminisce, and enjoy!!

Now, Usually I Don't Do This, But Um....

Now, usually I'm not a wear all black kind of person.  But, today was the exception.  Since the weather has made a slight change, I decided to do it to help keep warm.  It's been really nippy the past couple mornings, and from taking science classes through the years, black is supposed to attract heat (or something like that.)  I couldn't just wear all black and not have ANY color, so I decided to put on this fuchsia colored scarf.  I also put on a kelly green tank under the sweater, but you can't see it in this picture.  Today's outfit served its purpose:  it helped to keep me warm and it was comfortable enough to wear to class.

Who's On My Campus

Today, I present to you the lovely Jasmine.  I spotted her on campus as I was waiting for my class.  I thought she looked very cute despite the chilly temperatures this morning.  I really love how she looks stylish yet comfortable.  Her outfit shows you don't have to be in sweats to look and feel comfy.  Her multi colored top really pops against her black blazer, legging and boots.   And her quilted chain handbag adds the perfect touch.
